There are many things that go into your "web presence," and only some of them are technical. Here are the technical and non-technical things to consider when you start planning what to do:
Graphics/Multimedia
Some graphics will be provided for you when you hire us. These include such things as buttons, navigation bars, background textures, and other similar design elements. You are free to provide as many of these things as you want. (Remember: the more you provide, the faster you should see results.) Other graphics must be provided by you. These include such things as company logos and actual pictures of your business/products or other desired content. If these are not provided, the website will not be made. It's as simple as that.
Information
At FoxWeb Enterprises, our design philosophy might be summed up as Keep It Simple, Gilligan. Your website is made for the sole reason of conveying your message-your information-to the people who see it. Graphics, multimedia, layouts, and all the rest exist for the sole reason of enhancing your content. If someone comes to your website looking for some piece of information and can't find either it or a way to find it, then the website has failed.
Your message is usually text that gives information about yourself and/or your business. Ask yourself the following questions:
- What do I want to tell people?
- Why should they be interested in what I have to say?
- What can I do for them, and how can I tell them about it?
- What categories can my information be grouped into?
- What will determine the success of my site? Sales? Fame? Compliments from family and friends?
Once you have good answers to these questions, you will have a pretty clear understanding of what you want for your website. Your information categories each turn into a single web page, and all of your information put together is your website. Note that text you provide will be edited for spelling and grammar, but keeping your website focused on your message is, in the end, your responsibility. After all, only you know what your message truly is, and we are simply providing you another way to get that message out to interested people.
Just as with graphics, you must provide us with the information you want on your site. If you don't tell us what you want to say, it will never be said--or built.
Domain Names
Need a www.yourbusiness.com address for your website? Domain names are cheap, but they are rapidly being filled up. If you want, we can obtain your domain name (assuming it is available) and will charge you only our time (if it is hourly) and the actual expenses incurred. Note that domain name fees should be under ten dollars per year.
Hosting
Once you have your domain name, the next thing is to make arrangements with someone to put your finished website on their computer so that other people can view it. This is called hosting. We do not provide hosting services. However, we can act as your agent with a hosting service so that your website will be hosted on their computers. The hosting fees the service charges will be billed to you.
Email Accounts
If you ask for a hosted website, the hosting service will most likely offer you the ability to create email accounts for your domain. Although technical support would be their responsibility, we will always be willing to help you set up and maintain your email to the best of our knowledge and access.
Online Databases/Interactive websites
With several years of practice using the php scripting language and mysql databases, FoxWeb Enterprises is in a prime position to build you a website that lets you make the updates needed to keep your content current. A few examples could include:
- Event Calendars
- Picture Galleries
- Product Listings
- Links Pages
- Online contact information for organization/company members
- Online email feedback forms
...and much more. If you have an idea, just ask us about it. The worst that can happen is that we will apologize to you for not managing to know everything!
Special Projects
Just because most of the space here is devoted to someone wanting to construct a new (or renovated) website, there is no reason to assume that you must want a whole website in order to talk to us! The graphics, programming, and organizational knowledge available at FoxWeb Enterprises can be used for any of a number of online projects or ideas.
